July FIDE rating list

Carlsen leading, three players above 2800

Fide logo

July FIDE rating list has been published and Magnus Carlsen continues to lead the world chess ranking. For a fourth consecutive time Carlsen is rated number one, after January (ELO 2810), March (2813), and May (2813), he sets his own personal record of 2826 in the July rating list. The result came after the successful performance at Kings Tournament, where he gained the impressive 13 points after a +5 score.

This rating puts Carlsen on the second highest spot ever in the world rankings, only Garry Kasparov has had historically higher rating. On the July 1999 and January 2000 FIDE rating lists Kasparov reached a 2851 Elo rating.

The July 2010 rating list, however, will be remembered with one more important feature. There are three players that are above the mythical 2800 mark. Besides Carlsen, these are Veselin Topalov (for the 8th consecutive time) and the new entrant – the World Champion Viswanathan Anand. The Indian has exactly 2800 points after successfully winning the World Chess Championship and one game from the Hungarian Chess League, and enters the 2800+ rating list for the third time (after April 2006 and April 2008).

The 2700 club

There are no significant movements on the 2700 club list for July. The list of players above 2700 remains the same in number – 37 players, with Nielsen, Onischuk, Nepomniachtchi, and Adams returning to the club.

Among the highest rating gainers in the 2700 list are GM Vitiugov (+15 ELO), GM Navara (+13 ELO), GM Vachier-Lagrave (+13 ELO), and Magnus Carlsen (+13 ELO).

From the rest of the top 100 players rating increase can also be noted, with biggest rating gainers Anish Giri (+30), Bologan (+27), Van Wely (+24), Caruana (+22), Cheparinov (+21)

Women July rating list

Judith Polgar is without any doubt the top women player again on the July rating list. She has 2682 points and increases the gap to the second Humpy Koneru with 22 points to a total of 82 ELO points. Koneru lost 22 points in 11 games leaving Polgar as the clear favorite. However, the distance between Koneru and the chasing players does not reduce – Yifan Hou loses 12 points rating in the 36 games played in the period and Antoaneta Stefanova was inactive. Tatiana Kosintseva is contrasting, with 28 points gain from 11 games all from the Women GP series in Nalchik.

Facts and changes

The male rating list of top 100 players sees the first significant inflation of rating since September 2009. For several lists in a row the numbers of average top 100 rating were moving between 2689 and 2690. On the July rating list the average is 2693, which means that in the past period players have gained a total of 300 ELO points.

As noted, the female July rating list suffers deflation, with total of 200 ELO points lost by the top 100, and an average decrease of 2 ELO points to 2440.

As it is normal with juniors, there is strong rating inflation there and an increase of +4 ELO points average. Girls, however, crash a total of minus 13 points on average, to reach one of the lowest ratings since 2003.

Sanxenxo Open

Eleven players share first place, GM Arthur Kogan with best tiebreak

The 2nd Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Carlos I was held from 19th to 27th June in Sanxenxo (Pontevedra), the most exclusive beach resort in Galicia, Spain. 93 players from 13 federations took part in the event, among them Grandmasters Jesus De La Villa Garcia (Spain), Jorge Cori and WGM Deysi Cori (Peru), Arthur Kogan (Israel, but Catalonia resident) and last year winner Dragan Paunovic (Serbia, but local Galicia resident).

The tournament rules allowed the players to take up to three timeouts (bye) until the 8th round, each of them bringing half a point. Siblings Cori used this possibility on the first two days as they were busy playing the Ruy Lopez Rapid.

At the end of the ninth round there was a massive tie on the first place, with as many as eleven players sporting 6.5 points. It is interesting that only three players finished with 6.0 points. Total prize fund was 7500 EUR, there are also special prizes for rating and age categories, and local “Gallego” players.
