8-13th April in Cochabamba, Bolivia
Brazilian young star and 2005 national champion, Grandmaster Alexandr Fier, convincingly won the South American U20 Chess Championship, which was held on 8-13th April in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Fier lost only one game, against Ecuador’s FM Bryan Macías, and won the remaining eight for the clear first place finish, a full point ahead of the nearest follower.
Fier’s compatriot and current Brazil Chess Champion, IM André Diamant, finished clear second thanks to the last round win against Fernando Fernández of Peru. At the same time, his competitor FM Macías could not achieve more than a draw and had to remain content with the bronze medal.
Girls section had only nine participants. The new champion is Carla Heredia of Ecuador with 6.5 points (8 games), a full point ahead of the silver medalist WFM Gabriela Vargas (Paraguay) and third placed Paulina Orejuela (Ecuador).
