The Ascona Chess tournament – Reiffeisen International Chess Open and Academy – took place in hotel Ascona 3-6 January, 2009. It was a 5 round Swiss open event with participants from Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, Switzerland, and Italy. The first place was for the Ukranian IM Alexander Belezky who finished with 4,5/5. Half a point behind him finished the top seeded GM Mihajlo Stojanovic. Third place was for Franco Misiano from Italy, and the top local player was Gabriele Botta.
