The second round of the Dortmund chess tournament brought far more excitement than the opening day. Three decided games have put Gustafsson, Kramnik and Leko in the early lead, while others will use the upcoming rest day to prepare for the second two-round phase starting on Tuesday.
Kramnik-Van Wely resembled their earlier matches from Corus and Melodi Amber 2007, when Kramnik also used quiet b3-Bb2 plan to counter the intended Meran Slav defence. Once again, it turned bad for Van Wely who missed to give the extra pawn back and instead allowed invasion over the dark squares. Kramnik is rarely missing his chances and game was over couple of moves later.
In the game between two German players, Gustafsson-Naiditsch, White introduced a new plan of quick f4-e5 against the Ragozin Queen's Gambit declined. Black King's shelter was wrecked and the Monarch found itself under heavy attack from White pieces. This game is undoubtedly important from the theoretical point of view and players who have Ragozin in their repertoire with Black will have to seek for improvements.
Leko-Ivanchuk featured pawn structure that is perfectly fitting into Leko's taste. Black was doing fine until his Knight went astray on g5 and Leko locked it with 25. f3. Black's pawns advance looked scary but White was able to put it under control. After further simplifications, Ivanchuk was left down a piece and facing with a loss on another pawn, so he threw in the towel.
