Zong-Yuan Zhao earns GM norm

He just won the main event of Festival Internacional de Ajedrez GEMA

VII Festival Internacional de Ajedrez GEMA was held from 26th December 2007 until 5th January 2008 in Mondariz Balneario (Pontevedra), Spain. The main tournament was 10th category round robin which gave opportunities to earn title norms. Young Australian IM Zong-Yuan Zhao convincingly won the race with 6.5 points and earned Grandmaster norm. Second placed FM Diego Suarez Pousa, who was in fighting mood and signed only two draws, deserved IM norm.

Georgian star IM Ana Matnadze (2390) won the 4th category tournament with 6.5 points out of 9 games. Romanian Raul Schmidt (2145) and Spaniard Manuel Outerelo Ucha (2181) took first two places at the Under 2250 Open and earned invitation for the 2008 Cerrado IM.

As reported at The Closet Grandmaster blog, IM Zong-Yuan Zhao will now seek to complete his GM norms at the Sevilla Open and 6th Gibtelecom Chess Festival.
