World Junior Championship 2008 ended dramatically as it started. Abhijeet Gupta won against David Howell to take the World Junior Championship title. Arik Braun and Parimarjan Negi, Eltaj Safarli, and Maxim Rodshtein drew their games. Parimarjan Negi won the silver medal by 9.5 points. Third place was shared by Arik Braun, David Howell, Eltaj Safarli, Hou Yifan and Bassem Amin.

World Junior Girls Championship title was secured by the top seed Harika Dronavalli after her draw against Katerina Nemcova. She already had a full point gap before the round and that was enough for the title. Nazi Paikidze won against Mariya Muzychuk to join her at the joint second place as Mary Ann Gomes won against Miranda Mikadze and Kübra Öztürk won against Soumya Swaminathan to do the same.

This way in the final standings Harika Dronavalli became the world junior girls champion with the score 10.5 out of 13. The 2-5.places were shared by Mariya Muzychuk, the home side pride Kübra Öztürk, Mary Ann Gomes and Nazi Paikidze with 9 points.

At the championship were given many norms, expect full details by our good friend Ozgur Akman on Chessdom.com!

Gupta

Abhijeet Gupta

GM Gupta started the World Junior Championship with a logical win against Ivan Serenac. However, in round 2 he drew with the Romanian FM Baratosi and in round 4 he lost to the untitled Lin Chen. With 2,5/4 he was way behind the other competitors and had to play on board 18. After two convincing wins against IM Ashwin and IM Swiercz, Gupta could not stop the attack of the provisional leader GM Sfarli and lost in round 7. Round 8 draw with FM Nechepurenko. At this moment Gupta had 5,0/8, while 14 players had more than him and no one was counting the Indian GM as a possible title winner.

Right at that moment, a crucial change happened in the games of GM Gupta. He made five consecutive wins especially valuable of which were the games against the provisional winners IM Arik Braun and GM David Howell. That left Gupta on top of the table with 10,0/13.

Harika

Harika Dronavalli

IM Harika dominated the World Junior Chess Championship for girls in a true champion style. She won the games against the lower rated opponents, and drew the matches with her direct contendenders. Thus, IM Harika finished without a single loss, with 10,5/13. That is 1,5 points clear ahead of the second place! With the victory she added 6 ELO points to her rating and is getting closer to 2500.
