30.03.2008, Hluboka nad Vltavou
Kasparov arrived in the Czech republic directly from Austria, where he participated in Days of chess with the Klitschko brothers. Kasparov seemed a bit tired, but had to attend a meeting with President Vaclav Klaus.
After the meeting, there was a press conference. “Political matters we will discuss in English,
chess matters in Russian,” started Garry. Surprisingly, there were only few chess related questions and most of the journalists were focused on the politics. Here are some of the interesting questions.
Mr. Kasparov, you still miss the World Champion title in correspondence
chess. What is your opinion on this branch of chess?
“In this computer-chess era, the correspondence-chess lost part of its
original beauty. Today its more a matter of who is better at working with
computer engines and databases. Nevertheless the evolution cant be stopped
and in the future we can meet a version of the classical chess where the
players can use computers during the game.”
How your chess geniality helps you in the world of politics?
I use mainly my analytical skills which I improved thanks to chess. Learning
from one’s mistakes and analyze them correctly for the future is very
important in the world of politics. In chess I played quite aggressively, in
the open discussions that I lead, there is no space for this.
After the press conference Garry Kasparov played a simul at Hluboká nad Vltavou. He convincingly won 26:0 and you can see video from the event at Chessdom’s first report about Kasparov’s stay in the Czech Republic.
The simul was followed by an individual game between Garry Kasparov and Viktor Novotny’s teammate Martin Vaculik (ELO 2260), captain of the B-team
which is leading the 1st Czech league. The game was played without a clock and most of the time Kasparov was in deep thought. Kasparov won after 56 moves.
