GM Aleksej Alexandrov wins Abu Dhabi Chess Festival 2009

Aleksej Alexandrov close to entering FIDE top 100

GM Aleksej Alexandrov is the winner of Abu Dhabi Chess Festival 2009
. He conquered the gold medal with a final sprint, after defeating the temporary leader GM Rakhmanov in the final round. Alexandrov finished with 7,5/9, after seven victories (including full points against GM Salem A R Saleh, GM Kengis, and IM Laxman), one draw, and one lost game.

Three Armenians finished shared second with 7,0/9 – Andriasian, Anastasian, and Melkumyan. Anastasian won the third place, however, the second went to Rakhmanov with a better tiebreak.

Aleksej Alexandrov is 36 years old grandmaster from Belarus. His peak rating was January 2004 (2679 points) and since then is gradually falling. It hit the lowest point in July 2008 (2574 points) and since then is having a general upwards growth. In the next FIDE rating list GM Aleksej Alexndrov is expected to return into top 100, as he has collected over 30 ELO points in the last months, including strong performance at 4th Polonia Wroclaw’s Tournament, victories at Al Saleh 8th International Open, the Abu Dhabi chess festival, and the III Open Internacional Ajderez A. D. San Juan.
