SO Kavalas wins the Greek league

ES Thessalonikis with silver, PS Peristeriou takes bronze

One of the strongest league competitions in the history of Greece finished in Athos Palace, Halkidki, this Thursday. A total of 590 players, 96 of which GMs, IMs, WGMs, and WIMs, participated in the event organized by the Greek Chess Federation and AMO Galaxias.

Winner of the 37th Greek league is SO Kavalas. The team remained undefeated in direct matches, scoring 7 victories, drawing 2 matches, and gaining a total of 68,5 game points. SO Kavalas was led by the European Champion GM Evgeny Tomashevsky, supported by GM Papaioannou, GM Halkias, GM Skembris, and WGM Botsari on the higher boards.

What made the difference for Kavalas was the non titled and youth boards. Especially impressive was the result of Antonios Pavlidis, bronze medalist and winner of IM norm from Thessaloniki open. He scored the impressive 8,5/9 defeating strong opponents in the process. This result makes him the highest point scorer on any board, together with the SO Kalitheas talent Stamatis Kourkoulos-Arditis.

Second place was ES Thessalonikis. Led by GM Miroshnichenko and the second of Anand, GM Wojtaszek, Thessalonikis grabbed the silver medals after 7 won matches and 2 losses. Key contribution to the good result had the local GMs Dimitrios Mastrovasilis and Athanasios Mastrovasilis with 6,0/8 and 6,5/8 respectively, as well as the untitled Armenian player David Zakarian and the Greek talent Ageliki Papathanasiou with 8,0/9.

Third place in the general standings was for PS Peristeriou. They finished with the same match points as ES Thessalonikis, but had lower tiebreak score – 63,5 game points. The team of Peristeriou was led by GM Vassily Ivanchuk, wh achieved a good result on board 1 – 6,0/9. Several unlucky games and matches lost with small distance left Peristeriou away from chances for higher standings.
