Fabiano Caruana winning the third title of Italian Champion

Full point and a half ahead of rest of the field (Updated)

Fabiano Caruana is on the brink of winning his third Italian Chess Championship after the furious run in the 70th edition when he won three straight games from rounds eight to ten. He is now full point ahead of the second placed IM Carlo D’Amore and needs only a draw in the final round to cement his success.

Update: Fabiano Caruana won the last round clash against IM Denis Rombaldoni and convincingly claimed the Championship. The other games finished in draws, allowing Caruana to increase the winning gap to 1.5 points. (Final standings bellow)

Caruana previously won the 2007 and 2008 championships and skipped the 2009 event because of calendar conflict with the FIDE World Cup.

D’Amore, 46-years old psychiatrist from Rome and an amateur player, can already be delighted with his performance as he grabbed a 9-round Grandmaster norm.

Earlier leaders, IM Denis Rombaldoni and GM Carlos Garcia Palermo, who both stood well after round eight, suffered some painful defeats and fell behind Caruana. Exactly D.Rombaldoni is playing white against the young star in the last round, while D’Amore is black against GM Brunello and Garcia Palermo is black against IM Piscopo.
