GM Tigran Kotanjian Wins Karen Asrian Memorial

October 4-14, 2010, in the resort town of Jermuk, Armenia

The Armenian Chess Federation organized the 3rd Annual Karen Asrian Memorial Chess Tournament which was held on October 4-13, 2010, in the prominent resort town of Jermuk. A symbolic number of 64 players (12 Grandmasters) participated in the 9-round Swiss open event.

GM Tigran Kotanjian defended the lead that he held throughout the tournament and finished clear first by collecting 7.0 points. Such outcome was also directed by GM Evgeny Vorobiov’s last round victory against the other main contender GM Konstantine Shanava. Shanava still remained second, thanks to the best tiebreak score in the group of players with 6.5 each.

Chess Giants renamed to Karen Asrian Memorial

Karen Asrian is the Chess Giant

Karen Asrian Memorial

With a decision by the President of Republic of Armenia and President of Armenian Chess Federation Serzh Sargsyan, the “Chess Giants Yerevan-2008″ tournament is renamed to “Karen Asrian Memorial”. The Asrian Memorial will become a traditional event in memory of Karen Asrian.

Games from the Karen Asrian Memorial will start later today.
