Six share lead in 7th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open

Report by GM Neelotpal Das

The 7th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open is taking place in the Cititel Midvalley hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 1-7th September. A total 133 participants are taking part in the main tournament, including 17 Grandmasters, 3 Woman Grandmasters and many titled players from various countries. Notable attraction of the event is former Women World Champion Xu Yuhua from China.

After 6 rounds six players are sharing the lead with 5 points - FM Nguyen Duc Hoa VIE 2360, GM Wen Yang CHN 2507, GM Gupta Abhijeet IND 2587, GM Cao Sang VIE 2540, GM Zhou Weiqi CHN 2570 and Wan Yunguo CHN 2453. So far the tournament has been very hard fought with the organisers applying the 30-move rule which restricts players from making short draws.

Another interesting invention by the organisers has been a special prize awarded to those players (Non GM's) for beating Grandmasters. This especially encourages players to go for a fearless battle with Grandmasters. Sunday is a rest day and the final showdown of the event starts from Monday.

The festival started much before on 28th August with Individual Rapid and Team Rapids. This Chess Festival is the biggest event for chess in Malaysia and has become traditional for last 7 years which seems to have popularised the game in this country.

Besides the main tournament at the same time a FIDE Rated event and a senior tournament is also going on. After 5 rounds Grandmaster Kayumov Dimitry of Uzbekistan is 1.5 points ahead of the rest of the field (comprising 1 GM, 2 IMs, 1 FM and total 18 players) in the 1st Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng International Seniors Open and he seems definite of winning the event convincingly.

Magdalaga Luffe of Philippines is leading in the Pro Am Bank Chess Challenge tournament (Below 2200 elo).

Detailed results of all the tournaments can be seen at Chess-Results. Official website of the event with interesting facts and pictures - visit www.datcchess.blogspot.com.
