Ding Liren and Zhang Xiaowen are 2011 China Champions

The Chinese Chess Championships 2011 were held from 30th March to 10th April 2011 in Xinghua, Jiangsu. Both groups were 12-players round robin tournaments. Women World Champion Yifan Hou competed in the Open section.

GM Ding Liren won the Open championship in impressive manner, beating the top-seeded GM Wang Yue in the last round and finishing full two points ahead of the opposition. Despite his young age, only 19, this is the second national title for Liren who was also the champion in 2009.

Ding Liren qualifies to play for China in the World Chess Team Championship in Ningbo later this year. Four players that earned the place in the team earlier are Wang Yue, Wang Hao, Li Chao b and Yu Yangyi.

The Women championship had an exciting finish as two players entered the final round with equal points. But then GM Zhao Xue lost while WGM Zhang Xiaowen, a former Asia champion, made a draw, which handed her the title of the champion.

Ju Wenjun and Hao Wang are China Chess Champions

From 24th May to 4th June 2010 in Xinghua, Jiangsu Province

The 2010 China Chess Championships were held from 24th May to 4th June 2010 in Xinghua, Jiangsu Province. Both competitions were 12-player round-robins, with 11 rounds of play and time control of 90min +30sec per move.

In the extremely exciting finish of the men’s championship, three players shared the first place, but the top seeded Hao Wang was declared winner on best additional criteria – individual score against players tied on the same position. Key game was GM Zhou Jianchao – GM Wang Hao 0 – 1 from round eight.

Bu Xiangzhi headed the race through the entire championship, but a couple of indecisive results towards the end allowed Hao Wang to catch up with furious finish where he scored 4.5 out of 5. Zhou Jianchao also won three consecutive games after the unfortunate loss in the 8th round, which as it turned out, decided the outcome of the tournament.

Ju Wenjun took the pole position from the very beginning of the women’s championship and maintained the lead through the competition to deservingly win the title of national champion. She could even afford the luxury of losing the last game against bronze medalist Tan Zhongyi, but still remained first with 8.0 points. Second is WGM Huang Qian, the only player who managed to keep up with Wenjun’s pace.
