Iran Chess Championship

1st to 9th January in Tabriz, in the East Azerbaijan province

The 2011 Iran Chess Championship for men (for the year 1389 according to Iranian calendar) is being played from 1st to 9th January in Tabriz, in the East Azerbaijan province. The Championship is taking a different format compared to earlier years – this time 24 players compete over the 11 rounds of Swiss pairing system.

The defending champion and top-seed in this event, GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, already in the first round faced a fierce resistance from the lower rated Ali Faghirnavaz (2293), and conceded a draw. The 2008 champion GM Morteza Mahjoob is experiencing severe difficulties, having lost two and drawn two games versus mid-2200 opposition.
