28th Victor Ciocâltea Memorial

GM Gergely-Andras-Gyula Szabo takes clear first place

The 28th Victor Ciocâltea Memorial took place from 25th March to 4th April at Hotel Olimpia in Bucharest, Romania. 12 players, 7 Romanians and five from abroad, competed in the round robin tournament.

GM Gergely-Andras-Gyula Szabo convincingly won the tournament by collecting 8.0 points from eleven games. IM Marcin Tarbaz probably eyed a GM norm, but after a weak start with two losses, he is probably satisfied with the shared second place, where he landed together with GM Vadim Shishkin.

Victor Ciocâltea was Romanian Champion in 1952, 1959, 1961, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1975, and 1979. He played for Romania in eleven Chess Olympiads from 1956 to 1982.
