World Junior Chess Championship round 4

GM Howell David, GM Rodshtein, IM Wesley So, and GM Georg Meier leading

The exciting World Junior Chess Championship is pruducing fantastic chess in Yereven. With only 4 rounds, there is no player with full points and every round we witness many surprising results. The current leaders are GM Howell David, GM Rodshtein, IM Wesley So, and GM Georg Meier with 3,5/4. In the 3.0/4 chasing pack we find 12 GMs and IMs, including the top seded GM Wang Hao.

GM David Howell started with two solid wins against the Armenian talanted players Hambardzumian and Hayrapetian. His third round encounter was with IM Rohit (IND, 2491 ELO) in which Howell kept the inertia from the first games and clinched the win.

In round 4 the young English GM had for opponent the second seeded and NH Chess Tournament participant, GM Stellwagen. A 30 moves opposite color bishops game finished draw, which game Howell the first place with a RP of 2809 points.

European Team Chess Championship in Greece

GM Rodshtein started with a convincing win over the Indian Arun and straight forward victories against IM Melkumyan and IM Romanov. In round 3 he met IM Wesley So (who previously won against Pileckis, FM Bulski, and Mamikonian). Wesley So made a miracle save and got a draw in an Knight and Rook endgame in which he was two pawns down.

The girls section of the World Junior Chess Championship in Yereva has two leaders with full points and equal tiebreaks. These are WIM Nebolsina and the surprise of the competition WFM Sarah Hoolt. WFM Hoolt took down 4 strong players in a row – Aices Salvador, IM Elena Tairova, WIM Mary Ann Gomes, and WFM Tatevik Airapetian. Tomorrow the two leaders will meet in a direct match.
