World Youth Chess Championship 2008 is about to start

Peter Long blogs from Vietnam

World Youth Chess Championship 2008 is about to start with the participation of about 1000 players from all over the world. It will be a parallel event to the World Chess Championship and the European Club Cup, bringing the interest in chess to the highest.

Chessdom will have every day reports from Vietnam thanks to Peter Long who will be blogging live from there. Here is what he shares upon his arrival at the World Youth Chess Championship.

The Day Before the Arrivals of Delegations

Coming to Vung Tau two days early from Beijing via Singapore one can't help but see the frantic last minute preparations which I suppose must be typical of major events such as the World Youth Chess Championships and which I also understand to be the biggest sporting event this seaside resort town has ever seen.

Philippines at the World Youth Chess Championship

EIGHTEEN of the country’s leading young players, led by World Chess Olympiad mainstays Cristy Lamiel Bernales and Cheradee Chardine Camacho and World Mind Games campaigner Jan Jodilyn Fronda, will carry the Philippine flag when the World Youth Chess Championships get underway on Monday, Oct. 20 in Vung Tau, Vietnam.

Bernales will strut her wares in the girls 16 years old and under category, while Camacho and Fronda will make their moves in the girls’ 14 years old and under division.

Veteran youth campaigner Karl Victor Ochoa heads the bidders in the boys division, along with Alcon John Datu and Haridas Pascua.

Ochoa, the pride of Pulilan, Bulacan, will campaign in the tough boys 18 years old and under, while Datu and Pascua will try their luck in the boys 16 and under class.

“It’s a strong and talent-laden line-up capable of pulling surprises against the world’s bests. They are the future of Philippine chess,” said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay, who is personally bankrolling the team’s campaign in the two-week long competition.

Pichay personally tapped national youth training director and head coach Idelfonso Datu to handle the team, along with NM Roland Joseph Perez.

NCFP vice-president for Mindanao Val Rosabal is head of the delegation.

The other members of the delegation are Butch Villavieja and Ricky Navalta, international arbiters.

Datu, for his part, expressed confidence that the long hours of training and preparation by the players will finally reap dividends in Vietnam.

The other Filipino campaigners are:

Boys’ 14 and under – Jan Emmanuel Garcia, Prince Mark Aquino.
Boys 12 and under – John Ray Batucan, Jerad Docena. Vince Angelo Medina.
Boys 10 and under – Paulo Bersamina.
Boys 8 and under – Kyle Emmanuel Ochoa, Haine Patrick de Leon.
Girls 16 and under – Jedara Docena.
Girls 14 and under – Cherry Ann Mejia.
Girls 12 and under – Rowelyn Acedo.
Girl 10 and under – Samantha Glo Revita.

Pichay personally thanked the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), headed by chairman William “Butch” Ramirez, NCFP secretary-general and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and NCFP director Thaddeus Santos for their moral and financial assistance to the delegation.
